About Amniotic allografts
Amniotic allografts are used to treat wounds by covering, protecting, and nourishing the tissue. They are a treatment option for chronic wounds that do not heal with traditional methods. Here are some tips for using amniotic allografts in wound care
- Application: Place the allograft on the wound bed, either side up. If the wound is dry, add saline. Cover with a non-adherent mesh and a secondary dressing. Secure the dressing to prevent unraveling.
- Holding in place: Use steri-strips to hold the graft in place, but do not suture it.
- Healing: Leave the graft in place for at least one to two weeks. You should start to see improvement in the wound's size and depth within 2 to 3 weeks.
- Additional grafts: You can apply a second graft once the wound healing slows.
- When to use: Amniotic allografts are a last resort treatment and should only be used after other treatments have failed. For Medicare, a patient must have tried other wound care options for at least 30 days before amniotic allografts are covered.
Amniotic allografts are made from human amniotic fluid and/or amniotic membrane tissues that have been minimally manipulated into a liquid or patch format. They contain growth factors, cytokines, and anti-inflammatory properties that are important for wound healing.
